Why We Need Volunteers

In every classroom, there are children who could benefit from the extra attention of a volunteer working with them one-on-one or in a small group for reading, math or other subjects. Studies show that this individual attention is beneficial to the academic and emotional well being of children. Evaluations by Pacifica’s teachers report that the children benefit from working with our volunteers and show academic improvement.

Volunteers also bring skills and expertise to the classroom. There are many ways to volunteer. The time commitment can vary from a single experience, to several visits, to once a week in a classroom for the school year. Volunteers of all ages are welcome from teenagers to senior citizens. Volunteer Programs

There are so many ways to volunteer! To make the experience as rewarding as possible, we make every effort to accommodate preferences you have, such as the age of the children you will be helping, or subject areas you prefer. If you have other ideas for volunteering, we’ll be happy to discuss them.

Community Volunteers

Adult Volunteers work with children one-on-one or in small groups, helping them with reading, math or other classroom activities. We provide an orientation for all new volunteers, and math and literacy trainings for volunteers who choose to help in these subjects. Time commitment: 1-2 hours a week for a semester or more.

High School Community Service:

Are you a High School student who wants experience with community service and volunteerism?

  • Volunteer during after-school homework centers – high school students help elementary school students complete homework assignments.
  • High school students also help teachers in their classrooms after school by grading papers, preparing materials, and other clerical tasks.
  • High School Students help us also in Childcare Centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, our Summer Camp Programs and more.

Read Aloud Days:

In celebration of books and literacy, we hold Read Aloud Days at Sunset Ridge Elementary and Ortega Elementary. For these, community members are “Guest Readers” who visit classrooms and share their chosen story or read a book chosen by local librarians with children. Our Read Aloud Days are usually held in fall and spring; please refer to our Event Calendar or contact our office. Time commitment: 1 hour.

Oceana High School Senior Exhibition:

In collaboration with the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce, we recruit volunteers to assist in evaluating Oceana High School senior projects. This project involves reading the student’s research paper, attending training and the student’s oral presentation, and, finally, assisting the teacher in evaluating the project. Time commitment varies, at least 8 hours.

ThinkBridge Summer Camp:

Each June-July, Pacifica School Volunteers hosts ThinkBridge Summer Camp, encouraging young people age 6-12 to think, create, and innovate. Adult and high-school Volunteers work as support staff, helping campers in four subject areas, namely Thinking, Music, Strategic Games, and a STEM robotics and computing lab. Time commitment varies, all volunteers are asked to commit to at least two weeks. Camp runs every morning for approx. 4 hours.

Short-term Volunteers:

We also place art, music, physical education, and drama volunteers in the classroom to enrich the education of children with less exposure in these areas. This can be a short series of visits. Time commitment: 1 hour a week for a month.

Help with Special Events:

Volunteers are needed to work behind the scenes preparing for events such as sorting books for book sale, stuffing envelopes for direct mail piece, etc.
